The President has made an appeal to the University students not to waste the time that they could serve on behalf of the country and to pass out from Universities completing their education during the stipulated period.
In a certain era the students had to remain in Universities for many years. In every such year the service that could be done to the country had to be postponed, he said.
President Rajapaksa was speaking at the 2012/2013 Mahapola Higher Education Scholarship Awards ceremony held at Shalika Playground in Narahenpita yesterday (Dec. 02). The monthly Mahapola Scholarship was increased from 2500 to 4000 rupees in the 2015 budget. The Government has taken the initiative of providing this scholarship to 45,000 students spending a sum of 1800 million rupees.
Addressing the function, the President emphasized to the scholarship recipients that they should be geared to successfully confront any challenge to win the future. The President told the students to soon complete their education.
He said the students had the right to think. They should work by giving due consideration to the country’s and their own future. The Government has prepared the programs needed by the students for their future. The President requested them to study international languages. Attention should be focused on English Language to face the international competition. At the same time attention should also be drawn to technology. He called on them to compete with students in the world. All students had the strength to do it, he said.
More than 13,000 students representing the entire island were present on the occasion. President Rajapaksa symbolically handed over scholarships to some students. Ministers Johnston Fernando, S.B. Dissanayake and Bandula Gunawardena and Deputy Ministers Nandimithra Ekanayake, Hemal Gunasekara and Indika Bandaranaike joined in this occasion.
