The Sri Lanka Army is to hand over another stock of jewellery from the banks in the Northern Province to their rightful owners, at a ceremony to be held on today (4), under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
According to Army Commander Lt. Gen. Daya Ratnayake, the Army had identified 1,960 rightful owners and they would be handed over their valuables today.
The latest 1960 identified owners from Mannar (223), Vavuniya (319), Jaffna (45), Kilinochchi (1187) and Mullaittivu (186) will accordingly, arrive at Temple Trees today, to receive their jewelleries back from the President, he said.
The Army Commander added that the Army had to go to each and every house in the province to ascertain the rightful owners of these valuables and this process took much time .
President Mahinda Rajapaksa symbolically handed over jewellery and valuables found by the Army in the aftermath of the humanitarian operation to 25 rightful owners in Killinochchi last month.
Lt. General Ratnayake said that the people in the North never believed that their valuables and jewellery would be returned by the government.
