The country has to be developed only through our own Sri Lankan model, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said.
Addressing a UPFA election rally in Monaragala, the President said the government relies on our own development model even though the common candidate trusts a foreign model.
The rally was organised under the theme Surakshitha Hetak in support of UPFA candidate President Rajapaksa contesting the forthcoming Presidential polls.
“The country should be developed under a Sri Lankan model and not with imported models. As a patriotic government, priority is always given to our own locally developed model while the opposition harps on an imported model,” President Rajapaksa said.
He said it was against his policy since he and his government relied and trusted only in our own capabilities and resources. The people in the Uva province always stood by the UPFA. Uva bears a historic significance in that it was the patriotic people of Uva who fought for the country’s sovereignty, President Rajapaksa said.
“The people of Uva sacrificed a lot for the freedom and sovereignty of the country,” President Rajapaksa added.
He said 200 years after the 1815 historic patriotic struggle, the country is now faced with a similar situation as regards its sovereignty.
“Exactly 200 years from the historic freedom struggle of 1815, we all have to rally round for another freedom struggle,” he said.
President Rajapaksa added that the country should again be protected and liberated from the people who are attempting try to incite an Arab Spring.
“These evil forces speak of a regime change through a revolution like Arab Spring. Everyone is aware about the present situation in countries such as Iraq, Libya, Syria etc as a result of the Arab Spring,” he said.
The President said that he is confident that the people of the country will place the country above everything else so that maximum benefits will accrue to its people.
“You will be the people, who will work for the forward march of the peaceful country,” he told the large crowd.
“We are all children of one mother. Therefore, we should all come forward to take the country forward forgetting minor issues,” the President said.
President Rajapaksa said he is a person who honours his word.
“I do what I say and I say only what I can do,” the President emphasized.
President Rajapaksa said this was the era of development.
“As a people-friendly and patriotic government, every possible measure has already been taken to bring maximum benefits to the people. After liberating the country from the clutches of terrorism, the entire country is being developed. Everyone is witness to the development dividend,” he said.
President Rajapaksa said all sectors have been placed on a rapid development track including education, infrastructure, health, transport, agriculture etc.
“You asked me nothing more than to liberate the country from terrorism in 2005. At the time, two thirds of the coastal belt was controlled by the LTTE. Utmost priority was given to liberate and unite the country.
As a result of the clear and visionary leadership of the government, the country was liberated within four years of ending three decades terrorism,” the President said.
President Rajapaksa said he was able to unite the country by eradicating terrorism even though many former rulers failed to do so.
“As a result of liberating you from terrorism, you all are living peacefully and happily in a brotherly manner. After liberating the country, attention was focused on developing the country in 2010. Under these measures, the entire country has been placed on a rapid development track after 2009,” he said.
The President said 150,000 employment opportunities would be provided for youths by next year.
The January 8, 2015 Presidential poll is not a mere election but will decide the future of the country. The forthcoming election is significant since it will decide the future of the country. However, certain segments, including LTTE supporters abroad want to bring political and Security Forces’ leaders before the International Court of Justice, he said.
The present government never does anything for political gain or to attract votes. Everything is done to a proper plan, a set target and with a result oriented vision, President Rajapaksa said.
“The people have understood that a UPFA victory at the election is a victory for the people and the country.”
He said a UPFA victory will be a victory for the nation and the country, which has been placed on a rapid development track after it was liberated from the clutches of terrorism. “A UPFA victory will accelerate the on-going rapid development drive, which the country is witnessing,” President Rajapaksa said.
“We all have to live like one family in this united country. Harmony among all is vital for the country’s development and future progress,” the President said.
