President joins tsunami remembrance

President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Friday participated in an event to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami which claimed the lives of over 30,000 Sri Lankans.

President Rajapaksa joined the nation to observe two minutes of silence at 9:25 AM, the time when the first wave struck, to remember the victims.

Sri Lanka has declared the tsunami anniversary, a National Safety Day to raise awareness of measures to take in the event of emergencies. The National Safety Day observances were held in Hambantota this year.
