Govt. will leave no room for territorial division - President

President Mahinda Rajapaksa stated that local elements who tried to divide the country with the support of foreign help were once again at it and assured that the Government will not leave any room for such a move.

He made these observations while addressing rallies in Kiribathgoda, Ma-kola, Kirindiwela and Gampaha areas on Tuesday (Dec. 30).

The President said he will face any challenge against the country. He said some political parties had requested unreasonable demands from him in exchange for support at the Presidential polls.

He stressed that he would never get into any agreement which may threaten the division of any kind in the country in exchange of support.

President Rajapaksa said he had no doubt that on January 8, people will teach a bitter lesson to those who have betrayed public expectations and have threatened the country's well-being for petty political gain.

“Sri Lanka is a nation that suffered immensely for its freedom. Political parties and people should understand this and commit themselves to safeguarding freedom,” he added.

While urging the people to unite in the face of adversity, the President said “Let the world know that people are united against both local and international conspirators who are trying to destabilize and create divisions in the country again.”
