Government to pay compensation to flood-affected farmers


The government has decided to pay compensation to the farmers for their crops damaged by the inclement weather in the fast few weeks.

The Agriculture Ministry has decided to pay compensation for damaged crops and to provide funds for farmers affected by the floods to overcome difficulties and meet their requirements, Agriculture Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has said.

Minister Abeywardena said many agricultural lands have been damaged due to rainy weather in the island during the last few weeks.

According to the Minister, eggs and rice will be distributed among farmers for free as food items. Other goods will be provided to them at a reasonable price, he said.

The Ministry will also provide enough seeds for farmers for the next cultivation season, the Minister said, promising that the Ministry will support farmers in all possible ways to overcome the difficulties caused by the severe weather.
