Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya says that all arrangements are in place to hold a free and fair presidential election on the 8th of this month.
According to the Commissioner, ballot boxes will be handed over to the distribution centers today and the transfer of ballot boxes from the distribution centers to the counting centers will commence Wednesday morning.
The voting will take place from 7.00 am to 4.00 pm on the 8th. The Elections Commissioner requests the voters to arrive at the polling booth as early as possible in the morning to cast the vote. Voters must produce a form of identity approved by the Elections Secretariat to cast vote, he said.
He pledged that the Election Department would take action to ensure the voter's confidentiality.
The Elections Commissioner emphasized to both the Public and Private sectors that leave should be granted to the employees to vote at the election. The amount of leave depends on the distance the voter has to travel to cast his vote. However, at least four hours leave should be given to the voters to cast their ballot. He pointed out that employers are bound to grant suitable leave considering the distance of the polling booth. Such leave should be considered as special paid leave.
He said that 3,000 new ballot boxes have been made for this election for 12,000 voting centers. Ballot boxes have been made according to the number of voters. Both plastic and wood ballot boxes will be utilized.
The Commissioner stressed that there was no chance at all for altering the ballot boxes as widely believed. Political parties are given the opportunity to travel on the Election Day behind the vehicles carrying the ballot boxes after voting.
