Long queues, brisk Polling


People line up in large numbers throughout the country to cast their votes in a peaceful Presidential election.

About 50% turnout was recorded in the first four hours in urban polling booths.

Brisk polling was being reported from many places and the polling was going on smoothly and peacefully.

A total of voters 15,044,490 are eligible to cast their franchise in 12,314 polling stations in the 22 administrative districts. 19 candidates, including incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa from the UPFA and former SLFP General Secretary, former Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena from the New Democratic Front are in the fray.

Local election monitors including the People’s Action for Free and Fair Election (PAFFREL), Campaign for Free and Fair Election (CaFEE) and Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) and foreign observers, including Commonwealth Election Monitors observe today’s election.
