Singapore's President Tony Tan Keng Yam and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong have written to President Maithripala Sirisena, congratulating him on his victory in the Presidential election on Thursday.
Singapore President Tony Tan Keng Yam has said that Sirisena's victory is a testament of the faith that the people have in the new President's leadership.
President Yam has noted that the two countries enjoy close and longstanding ties and Singapore has consistently supported national reconciliation, peace and progress in Sri Lanka.
"We hope that the positive momentum in Sri Lanka's reconstruction and development efforts will continue. There is much our two countries can do together to further strengthen bilateral relations, and I look forward to working closely with you in this regard," Singapore President said.
"I am confident you will lead Sri Lanka towards even greater stability and prosperity, and would like to wish you every success in your new appointment," he added.
Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong congratulating President Sirisena noted that the "unprecedented strong voter turnout and your decisive victory reflect the faith and hope that Sri Lankan voters have placed in your vision and leadership."
"I am confident that under your leadership, Sri Lanka will continue on its current path of peace and progress and grow to greater heights," Prime Minister Loong said.
He said the ties between Singapore and Sri Lanka are "warm and longstanding."
Recalling that Singapore has consistently supported national reconciliation in Sri Lanka through concrete projects to help better the lives of Sri Lankans, such as in healthcare and education, the Prime Minister said the people-to-people ties are strong, and Singaporean and Sri Lankan businesses have shown increasing interest to explore new opportunities in each other's countries.
"I look forward to growing our ties and taking our relations forward. I wish you success and hope that you will visit Singapore at the earliest opportunity.
