His Holiness Pope Francis concluded his two-day visit to Sri Lanka today and left for the Philippines Thursday morning.
President Maithripala Sirisena bid farewell to the Pontiff at a ceremony held at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake.
The President presented the Pope with an album containing the photos of his tour in Sri Lanka as a memento.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe, Ministers Ravi Karunanayaka, John Amaratunga, Karu Jayasuriya Joseph Michael Perera and Rishad Bathiudeen also were present to bid farewell to the Pope.
On Wednesday, the Pope held an outdoor mass at Galle Face Green in Colombo where over 500, 000 people flocked to take part in the historic event. The Pope canonized Sri Lanka's first saint, Indian-born missionary Rev. Fr. Joseph Vaz.
In the afternoon of Wednesday, Pope Francis delivered a mass at the Madhu Shrine in Mannar.
On his way to the Airport, the Pope visited the Benedict XVI Cultural Institute at Bolawalana.
Pope Francis is expected to arrive in Manila on Thursday, January 15 at 5:45 pm. President Benigno Aquino III will welcome the pontiff to the predominantly Catholic nation.
