Committee to look into implementation of large scale development projects

 

The cabinet has decided to review the environmental impact on implementing the large scale development project such as Fort City Project and Northern Highway Project. A community headed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe has been appointed to consider whether the basic environmental protection measures have been taken before implementing such projects.

Ministers Patali Champika Ranawaka, Rajitha Senarathne, Mangala Samaraweera and Arjuna Senarathne are the members of the committee. At the cabinet press briefing held in Colombo yesterday, cabinet spokesman Minister Rajitha Senarathne said the cabinet has decided to request the Minister of Finance to submit a report on the tax concessions given to those development projects.

The Cabinet of Ministers requested the Minister of Food Security to investigate on the stocks of imported rice now being stored in the government as to whether they are suitable for human consumption and take steps to release the rice stocks to the market prior to the arrival of 2014/2015 Maha Season rice harvest to the market.

It was also decided to request the Minister of Finance to suitably increase the levy of tax now being charged at the rate of Rs. 1/- per kilogram for imported rice.
