Housing and Samurdhi Minister Sajith Premadasa said a project to build 50,000 housing units for underprivileged families will be implemented this year.
Assuming duties at his Ministry yesterday (Jan. 22), Minister Premadasa said a housing development fund will be started with a sum of 5 billion rupees. Donations from well wishers and philanthropists will also be received for this fund. He stated that his salary and other expenses for official residence and vehicles will also be added to it.
The housing project will cover 160 electorates and is expected to select 300 beneficiaries from each electorate. "The ministry will provide 100,000 rupees as a low interest loan for each house. It is also expected to get the beneficiaries, public and private sector institutions or organizations involved.
Minister Premadasa said the ministry will initiate another project to build 5,000 houses, especially for the poorest of the poor, while the ministry will provide 75,000 rupees for each beneficiaries of this project as a donation. The total estimated cost of this project is Rs. 360 million. It is expected to invest funds for this project through the Divi Neguma funding process.
An intensive investigation will be conducted into the allegation that money from Samurdhi compulsory savings has been spent for political propaganda campaign of the previous government during the presidential election.
