No additional taxes to offset price reductions – Finance Minister

The Government will never place the burden of reducing the prices of essential goods again on the people, Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake said.

Addressing the media at the ministry on Friday, Karunanayake said certain groups were asking him whether the Government was planning to place the burden of price reduction of essential goods on the public in the form of taxes. The Minister urged the public not to be misled by these baseless allegations made by incompetent people.

The Government headed by President Maithripala Sirisena and Ranil Wickramasinghe always fulfills promises and the people of this country will be able to enjoy the benefits of maximum relief on January 29, he said.

“Corruption in this country has increased tremendously. The present Government’s plan is to reduce the huge tax burden on the public, which was the result of corruption,” Karunanayake said.

“As the Finance Minister, it is my duty to reveal the real situation of the country’s economy to the people. I hope to do this on January 29,” he said.

Minister Karunanayake added that measures will also be taken to reduce the unnecessary tax paid by private institutions and ask them to provide the benefit of these reductions to the private sector workforce which represents 83 percent of the country’s working population.
