President Maithripala Sirisena assures the Moragahakanda Project will be completed as scheduled. It is a fulfillment of an expectation of the people in North-Central Province.
The President recalled that he laid the foundation for the project back in 2007, while functioning as the Minister of Mahaweli Development. However, within 48 hours of this event, he was given another portfolio through a cabinet reshuffle. Although he was given the Mahaweli Ministry again funds for the project were not given for a period of five and half years.
The President emphasizes the water required by the farmers in North-Central Province for their activities will be given from the Moragahakanda Project by completing it successfully.
President Sirisena made these remarks while engaging in an observation tour of the Moragahakanda Project yesterday (Jan. 26).
He also held discussion with the project Engineers, officials and all other resource personnel at the site.
A sum of 382 million US dollars will be spent for the Moragahakanda Project. Water requirement of the districts of Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, Matale and Puttalam will be fulfilled from this project.
Furthermore, it will add 25 megawatts to the national electricity grid. The project will also help to control the floods which occur in the low lying areas of Polonnaruwa District during the rainy season.
