Criticism is more important than eulogy – President

Criticism is more important than eulogy when taking forward a government chosen by you, President Maithripala Sirisena said.

Instead of bringing governments to power from time to time and giving them the opportunity to act stubbornly what is more important is to work continuously with the government and lead them on the correct path.

President made these comments at a meeting with representatives of ‘Citizens’ Power’ at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday.

‘Citizens’ Power’ representatives told the President that the Executive Council set up to promote steps to establish good governance in the country is a laudable step, but representatives should also be appointed from the civil society in addition to the political representatives.

When ensuring right to information necessary acts should be introduced to access information in the transparent manner, they said. Early implementation of National Drug Policy and introducing Audit Act are also appropriate steps, they pointed out.

Ministry of Cultural Affairs has a major role to play in creating good governance and coexistence among people they said while emphasizing the importance of introducing a White Paper on cultural affairs.

The representatives pointed out that the Presidential Investigation Unit running under the President should be re-structured and it should not be used for narrow political agendas.

The President expressing his views said that in future he will take necessary steps after consultations with all parties.

Artists, journalists, and union leaders were present at the occasion.
