Elections Commissioner announces holding elections for two local bodies in North

Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya has announced that elections to the Pudukuduirippu and Maritimepattu Pradeshiya Sabhas in the Mullaitivu District will be held on February 28.

Election in the two local government bodies were postponed by the Court of Appeal after writ applications were filed by petitioners requesting the court to delay the holding of elections in the two bodies since the demining and resettlement was not complete.
However, the Northern Provincial Council elections last year and the Presidential elections this year were held in Pudukuduirippu and Maritimepattu.

The petitioners on January 28, 2015 have withdrawn their applications before courts. The Elections Commissioner has therefore decided to hold elections to the two Pradeshiya Sabhas on February 28.

The election will be held according to the 2014 voters' registry where 29,269 are eligible to vote in Pudukuduirippu and 23,489 are eligible in Maritimepattu.
