The draft bill on the national drug policy has been approved by the cabinet of ministers, said Cabinet spokesperson Minister Rajitha Senaratna.
The minister noted that the draft bill contains a number of points, including the usage of the generic name during the sale of drugs.
As a result of this, he notes that the prices on the drugs would reduce, importing of thousands of unnecessary drugs could be stopped and danger to patients' lives due to substandard drugs could be avoided.
The Minister further said hopefully within five years, all medicinal drugs needed for the country would be manufactured within Sri Lanka.
He said the draft bill will be presented in Parliament within few weeks.
