Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera had talks with British Foreign Minister Hugo Swire in London yesterday (9).
The British Foreign Minister said that he had a good meeting with the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister, building on the discussion they had in Colombo.
He was in Sri Lanka last month where he called on President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Wickremesinghe and other senior ministers – including the Minister for Resettlement, Reconstruction and Hindu Affairs D M Swaminathan – to discuss the new government’s reform programme and areas of potential co-operation.
He also met the new Governor of the Northern Province H M G S Palihakkara, local politicians and members of civil society in Colombo. The British Minister had also visited Jaffna and met Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran.
At the end of his Sri Lanka visit, Swire had said that UK hopes that the new Sri Lankan Government will work together with the international community at the UN Human Rights Council, and will co-operate with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights’ investigation into alleged war crimes during the final stage of the Sri Lankan conflict.
Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera is in the UK while on his way to the US where he will have talks on Thursday with US Secretary of State John Kerry, reported Colombo Gazette.
