Rapid solution to protect people from natural disasters - President

A long lasting solution will be implemented to prevent people from frequent natural disasters in the Polonnaruwa District, President Maithripala Sirisena said.

The President said speedy measures will be taken to protect people from natural disasters reported annually in the Polonnaruwa District.

"We have been talking much on this issue and hence I believe this is the right time to implement a permanent solution to this natural threat. Generally, people in the Dimbulagala and Welikanda Provincial Secretariat divisions in the Polonnaruwa District are victimized and face immense hardships due to floods reported once in every two years period. Therefore, a suitable and sustainable program will soon be implemented to protect the people and cultivations in the district especially in the Dimbulagala and Welikanda PS divisions. The Government may seek assistance from foreign countries in this regard," the President said.

The President was participating in a ceremony organised to grant financial assistance to people victimized in the massive floods that took place December last year. Under the program, Rs. 35 million was granted to 1,427 families as financial assistance to rebuild their lives.

President Sirisena while pointing out the social and personal responsibility of people, who are commonly victimized, said the people are reluctant to vacate those areas affected by floods. Right after a disaster takes place, victimized people express their concern to vacate the area to settle in a safe location provided by the Government.

However, after everything is done, the people are reluctant to move out from the area citing many other issues. This attitude has become a hindrance to protect people from getting victimized from these disasters.

He said certain families living near the Parakrama Samudraya were given lands ten years ago. Even though, after everything was completed these families did not move to their new lands and continue to live in that particular area prone to floods.

"I believe people are also duty-bound to abide by those programs launched to save people from natural disasters. The government not only provides the people with lands but also takes measures to strengthen the living standards of them," the President said.

The President praised the Government Officers and the Security Forces' assistance in disaster situations.
