A fund was set up yesterday by the business community in Sri Lanka to boost the National Kidney Fund.
Rs. 8 million was credited to the National Kidney Fund on the opening day organized by the Holcim Lanka Limited.
During his election campaign in January President Maithripala Sirisena requested people to credit funds to an account opened to provide relief to the kidney patients instead of spending them on cutouts and bill boards of him.
Addressing the gathering President Sirisena pointed out that most of the kidney patients are less privileged people and assisting them is a great merit.
Various groups appointed to study root causes of this menace have identified utilization of agrochemicals is a major reason for the kidney diseases President said adding that he didnít have the opportunity to perform his duties as then Health Minister and as a leader representing people in affected areas due to various pressures.
A Presidential Task Force has been already established to find measures to prevent the spread of this disease, the President said.
These funds raised for the welfare of kidney patients will be used for surgeries, medicine, social welfare of the patients and awareness programmes, President Sirisena emphasized.
