Sri Lanka concerned over situation in Maldives

The Sri Lankan government yesterday expressed its concern over the developing situation in the Maldives following the arrest of former President of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed.

"Sri Lanka, as a friendly neighbouring country is concerned about the recent developments in Maldives," the Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement Wednesday.

"It is hoped that all stakeholders in Maldives will resolve their differences in a peaceful manner, within the legal provisions in Maldives," the Ministry said without referring to Mr. Nasheed's arrest.

Mr Nasheed, leader of the main opposition party, was arrested on Sunday under anti-terror laws.
