‘No agreement detrimental to SL’s independence will be signed’

- President

President Maithripala Sirisena emphasized that his government will never enter into agreements which negotiate Sri Lanka’s national independence to foreign control.

Speaking at the Wariyapola Sri Sumangala Thera commemorative event at Wariyapola Sri Sumangala Pirivena yesterday (2), President Sirisena pointed out that in modern times, powerful nations will put efforts to control developing countries through agreements on development, economy, defense and other sectors.

He further said that the government will act prudently when entering into such agreements with other nations.

The President pointed out that Sri Lankans should never forget the legacy of the colonial period when the colonialists ruined the Sri Lankan culture, religion and even humanitarian values of the people. “The 400 year colonial period should be a good example when building our future”, he said, adding that everyone should identify their responsibilities and sacrifices at present in protecting our motherland.

The President also recalled the value of Wariyapola Sri Sumangala Thera who sacrificed his life in the name of country and race.
