Train passengers will be able to enjoy free Wi-Fi facilities at 100 selected railway stations island-wide by April, Railway Department sources said.
Accordingly, Wi-Fi hotspots will be established in over 100 selected railway stations under this program with the assistance of Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT). Railway Commercial Superintendent Sisira Kumara said all arrangements are in place to commence this programme from the Fort Railway Station, in Colombo.
"By April, there will be almost 100 railway stations with free Internet access which enables passengers to access internet via smart phones or tablets," he added.
Kumara said infrastructure facilities necessary for this project are still being constructed by the Railway Department in selected railway stations.
Another joint project was launched by SLT and Mobitel that has provided access to free Wi-Fi hotspots on Intercity Express trains for passengers.
It was launched by SLT Chairman Kumarasinghe Sirisena at the Jaffna Railway Station recently.
