The Power and Energy Ministry will achieve 100 percent electrification in the Anuradhapura District soon, Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said.
He was expressing these views after opening an electricity project at Anamaduwa in Puttalam.
Electricity projects in Anuradhapura will be completed before Sinhala and Tamil New Year, he said. Minister Ranawaka said supplying electricity to remote areas will be considered a priority within the 100 day program of the Government.
"When I assumed duties as the Power and Energy Minister in 2010, the previous government had planned to provide electricity for all by 2018. We made it more efficient and we made arrangements to complete the task by 2012 under the theme of ‘Electricity for All by 2012’.
"We planned to make this effort a success with Iranian financial assistance. But we were unable to complete the project due to restrictions on Iran.
"Now, we will achieve the target by using the funds of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB)", the Minister said.
The Ministry and the CEB has to spend Rs. 440,000 to provide electricity to a house in remote areas.
