President orders release of 86 Indian fishermen

President Maithripala Sirisena ordered the release of 86 Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody as a goodwill gesture ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modiís visit to Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan Navy arrested the Indian Fishermen from Tamil Nadu on February 26 along with their 10 boats for poaching in the Sri Lankan waters off the eastern coast of Mullaitivu.

Prime Minister Modi, who is due in Colombo on Friday, will be the first Indian PM to visit the island in 28 years since Rajiv Gandhi in 1987 made the bilateral visit to the island.
