Message of Condolence to Honorable Lee Hsien Loong, Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore

I am deeply saddened by the death your father and former Prime Minister Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, the founding father of modern Singapore, an iconic figure who has left an indelible mark globally for his qualities of leadership.

On behalf of the Government and people of Sri Lanka and myself, I express my sincere condolences to Your Excellency, the Government and the people of Singapore and the members of the bereaved family during this period of grief.

Late Mr. Lee will be fondly remembered by the people in Sri Lanka as a fearless reformer and the architect of modern Singapore who in the early years of his governance saw Sri Lanka at that time as a model for development for Singapore. Few have demonstrated such commitment to the cause greater than themselves in developing Singapore to become of the strongest economies in the world today.
He will be solely missed by all who knew him for the ideals that he firmly stood for and his tireless efforts to promote world peace and understanding among people.

Mr. Lee dedicated his entire life to Singapore from his first position as a legal advisor to the labour unions in the 1950s after his graduation from Cambridge University, forming the People’s Action Party, which won government in 1959, rising to be its first Prime Minister leading it to be an independent Republic in 1965, and the outstanding position it holds internationally today.

I salute this legendary figure of Asia, a leader we all try to emulate today.
