The Government has decided to increase the Mahapola bursary from Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 5,000 starting from June.
According to sources of the Prime Minister's Office, the Government decided to extend this assistance one month ahead of schedule under its 100 Day programme.
Parallel to this, the Government has also decided to increase the student allowance to those not receiving the Mahapola Scholarship bursary from Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 2,500.
Hence 45,000 students who are entitled to the Mahapola Scholarship bursary and 29,500 others who receive financial assistance will benefit from the increase that will cost the Government Rs. 644 million.
