The cremation of the Most Ven. Aggamaha Panditha Udugama Sri Buddharakkhita Mahanayake Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter will be held with full State honours at the Police Grounds, Asgiriya, Kandy on April 12 at 2 pm.
President Maithripala Sirisena has directed the Commissioner of Buddhist Affairs to ensure that the Prelates' funeral be held with state patronage with full honours, said the Deputy Lekakhadhikari of the Asgiriya Chapter Ven. Narampanawe Ananda Thera.
Meanwhile, the Government declared April 12 as a National Day of Mourning for Mahanayake of Asgiriya Chapter Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Thera.
According to Home Affairs Ministry, the Government also requested the public to fly the national flag at half mast in front of their houses to express condolence over the passing away of the Mahanayake Thera.
All Government institutions should display the national flag at half mast and a circular in this regard would be issued to all government departments today. All liquor shops and bars will remain closed on April 12 in view of the state funeral of the Mahanayake Thera.
The remains of the Mahanayake Thera will be kept at the Jayaratne Funeral parlour till 7.00 a.m. today (April 9) for the people to pay their last respects.
Afterward the Thera's remains will be taken to Kandy.
