'I was elected not to enjoy the glory of Presidency' - President


President Maithripala Sirisena said people elected him not to enjoy the glory of the Presidency but to remove its excessive powers.

He said he has already implemented the necessary measures in this regard. The President said he is not a leader who forgets what he mentioned in his election manifesto when he comes to power.

The President was addressing non partisan meeting themed ‘A Free Era Unites Nation’ for 19th amendment to the constitution held at Viharamadevi Open Air Theatre today (April 24).

Today, many people questioning what was done in these 100 days, the President said, adding that the Government, under the 100 day programme has won many things for the future of our country.

The most valuable gift given to our people within these 100 days is the wining of the international friendship, cooperation and support towards our motherland, he said.

“Today, we don't have enemies within the international community”, the President further said.

President Sirisena said that there was much done in these 100 days and the priority has been given to the presenting the 19th Amendment to the Constitution and making changes to the electoral system.
