A special delegation of the Indian Fishermen’s’ Organization called on President Maithripala Sirisena at the President’s Office, Colombo yesterday (May 12). The discussion focused on the difficulties faced by the Indian Fishermen.
The President who gave a patient hearing to their views told them that any problems can be resolved through discussion.
The President also stressed that the issue should not be allowed in any way to affect the close and friendly ties between India and Sri Lanka which have enjoyed centuries.
President Sirisena went on to say that the issue has to be resolved without causing injustice to both countries and added that he has issued the necessary instructions to the officials concerned to continue the discussions without interruption.
The President also told the Indian fishermen’s delegation that he expected the cooperation of the Fishermen Associations of both countries in this regard.
Resettlement, Reconstruction and Hindu Religious Affairs Minister D.M. Swaminathan was also present at the discussion.
