Gazette Notification on 20th Amendment released


The Gazette notification on the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, which includes the new electoral system has been published.

This Gazette Notification was issued after the Cabinet approved the proposed amendment to the constitution following discussions to arrive at a consensus.

With the release of the Gazette Notification, the related Bill will be presented in Parliament within 14 days. After that it should be directed to the Supreme Court for its opinion. The Supreme Court will determine whether the Bill should be approved by a two thirds majority in Parliament or through a referendum in addition to the 2/3rd majority.

After the Supreme Courtís determination the Bill should be approved in Parliament after a debate. A Commission should be appointed for delimitation of new electorates for its implementation.

According to the 20th Amendment the number of seats in Parliament will be increased from 225 to 237.
