6151 candidates vie for Parliamentary seats

 

The General Election will be held on August 17 and the acceptance of nominations ended at noon yesterday and the public were given 1 hours to file objections against the nominations which were handed over to the respective returning officers.

Over 22 recognized political parties and a large number of independent groups will compete for the 8th Parliament at the General Election.

The 225 member Parliament comprises 196 elected members and 29 members from the National List. The candidates from the National List are apportioned on the basis of the election results while 196 candidates are elected to the Legislature under the PR system.

According to the media release issued by the Commissioner of Elections 300 nomination papers from recognized political parties and 201 Independent groups have been accepted for the 2015 August 17 General Election.

The Commissioner rejected 12 Nomination papers from the recognized political parties and 24 nomination papers from the Independent groups.

Of the total of 6,151 total number of candidates, recognized political parties have fielded 3,653 candidates while there are 2,498 independent candidates competing to secure a place in the 225 seat Parliament.
