President Maithripala Sirisena inaugurated a luxury bus service a for the benefit of the pilgrims who come from all over the island to worship the Atamasthana, the eight sacred places of Buddhist worship in Anuradhapura.
After declaring open the renovated Abhayagiriya Stupa and offering the first pooja for the Stupa, the President inaugurated the luxury bus service on July 31.
Four luxury buses of the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) were allocated to service the Atamasthana route. The President bought the first bus ticket inaugurating the service.
The buses will take the pilgrims from site to site covering the 22 kilometer tour of the eight sites for a fare of Rs.100 per person.
The service has been started to alleviate the problems the tourists as well as pilgrims face when they visit the sacred places.
Minister Nandimithra Ekanayake, the Chief Minister of the North Central Provincial Council, Peshala Jayarathna and other dignitaries were present at the event.
