President Maithripala Sirisena emphasized that he will not allow to discontinue the construction work of the Moragahakanda water project halfway as this project would resolve the agricultural and drinking water problems faced by the farmers in Rajarata, ending their years long sorrowful tale.
The President made these remarks during an inspection tour today (August 03) to Moragahakanda reservoir. He also looked into the progress of the project and instructed the Project Director and the staff to complete the work within the stipulated period.
The foundation stone for this Moragahakanda project, the biggest multi-functional irrigation project, was laid by President Sirisena in 2007 when he was the Minister of Agricultural Development and Agrarian Services Development.
The construction work on the project is expected to be completed by 2016. While the project is completely handled by local engineers, the financial assistance is being provided through the Government.
“Since 2012 the construction work on the project is progressing well to date”, said Mr. R.B Tennakoon, Project Director.
He further said that the resettlement process of the people in the area, who lost houses and property due to the project, is being completed successfully and the much needed infrastructure facilities such as road, electricity will be provided speedily.
