President Maithripala Sirisena said he will implement a Five Year Development Plan for the Polonnaruwa district to rectify the injustice happened in carrying out the national development of the country.
Priority will be given to the education, health and agricultural fields, the President said, adding that the government will take further necessary steps to develop the Polonnaruwa district like any other developed district in the country within the next five years.
He made these observations while attending a function held to declare open the two-storied building complex for the Zonal Education Office in Polonnaruwa on August 09.
The aim of the Government is to increase the literacy rate by 100%, he added.
The President further said that everyone in the education field must commit themselves to utilize maximum resources given to the progress of the education field by the government to build a better future for the children in the country.
The present Government is also committed to eliminate all forms of obstacles in the field of education and to provide equal education opportunities for every student.
“In National development there is no difference such as North, South, East, West or Central and the objective of the present government is to take our country forward to a common goal of development with proper planning,” President Sirisena said.
President Sirisena, after unveiling the plaque, declared open the new building complex. He also engaged in a cordial discussion with the staff.
The Lak Daru Diriya scholarship Programme also held in parallel to this event and the President symbolically handed over ten scholarships to the selected students.
When the Lak Daru Diriya scholarship program was established in 2000, the President , as a Minister donated his first salary to award scholarships to school students and university students in low-income families in the Polonnaruwa district.
