Colombo to be the gateway to South Asia

[08 Mar 2001]

Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo, would be transformed into the commercial hub of South Asia, Urban Development Minister Mangala Samaraweera said yesterday. The Minister told the media that a master plan had been devised and work already begun.

Minister Samaraweera was briefing the press on the activities carried out by his Ministry.

Colombo’s once famous waterfront, the Beira Lake would regain its former glory in the near future, he said. “We will make Colombo one of the nicest cities in South Asia. Work on the southwest block of the Beira Lake would begin on Thursday [8th]” the Minister promised.

“All the government departments and official residences of VIPs including the President’s House will be shifted out of Colombo and moved to Sri Jayawardenepura.”

Samaraweera said that it was very important to move out government offices from prime land in the city, as the ministry expects to improve the infrastructure in Colombo in collaboration with the private sector.
