Japan grants US Dollars 5.3 million to improve food technology
[15 Mar 2001]

The Japanese Government has granted a sum of US Dollars 5.3 million (Rs. 460 million) to the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) for a project to improve the institute’s capabilities in food technology and post harvest management.

The project will facilitate both the infrastructure and human resource development of the Agro and Food Technology Division of the institute.

The main objectives of the project are to provide technological support services to the food industry to upgrade quality, safety, wholesomeness and output of processed food, minimise post-harvest losses and improve cost effectiveness. This project will also assist in upgrading traditional technologies so as to improve the utilisation of food and provide the technology for the manufacture of nutritionally balanced quality assured food products.

Seventy five percent of the Sri Lankan population is rural and depends on agriculture as a livelihood. This project will directly assist in improving the services of the ITI to the rural sector.
