ADB to assist uplift the rural poor
[September 29, 2001 - 6:45 GMT]

The Asian Development Bank’s Japan Special Fund (ADB) has granted USD 5.5m to Sri Lanka, which will help conduct a study to develop a rural finance system, and thus improve the quality of life in the rural areas.

“The study would support the Sri Lankan Government’s plans to build a market-oriented rural finance system, raltionalise rural finance institutions and strengthen governance,” ADB said.

The ADB added that this would enhance the flow of credit in rural areas, essential for the growth of agriculture and rural businesses.

Since 1998 the Japan Special Fund has provided grants for such projects and technical or policy studies. The fund particularly supports activities aimed at poverty reduction with an emphasis on environmental protection, private sector promotion and financial sector reforms.
