Tigers shell playground, market [16 February 2000] A defense ministry release issued today said that LTTE cadres had fired mortars from their positions in Thenmaratchy on Monday at Chavakachcheri town forcing civilians in the vicinity to flee in search of safe cover. Tension ran high throughout the hamlet as LTTE mortars hit the town, with the terrorists firing shells into both the Urban Council playground and the town market. Chavakachcheri residents said the shelling had continued during the night. In Batticaloa yesterday at 4.45pm, a mortar attack by terrorists killed thirteen police constables and two women travelling in a vehicle carrying security personnel from Welikanda to Batticaloa. In Iyakachchi at around 8.30am yesterday, troops attacked a group of terrorists and killed one, with the others fleeing the area carrying their causalities. Later that morning in the same general area, troops attacked and destroyed a terrorist bunker. Monitored terrorist transmission confirmed that six terrorist had been killed and another nine wounded in the attack. In other incidents yesterday, security forces in Sankatharavayal, Jaffna attacked and destroyed a terrorist bunker with small arms and machine guns, killing seven terrorists. In Muhavil, security forces launched an attack on a terrorist location and destroyed a terrorist bunker, killing eight terrorists. And in Tuvikulam yesterday at around 10.30am, troops sniped at and killed one terrorist.
