LTTE mortars kill, wound Tamil villagers [23 Mar 2000]  

Yesterday around 9.30 am in Muttur, Trincomalee, a 28-year-old Tamil civilian named Manikka Thurei was killed and woman named Murugesu Kunanayaki was seriously inured when terrorists attacked their village with mortars.

The critically injured woman was evacuated to Muttur hospital and later then transferred to the Trincomalee Hospital.

Around 9 am, an Army detachment and police station at Kattaparichchan were attacked by terrorist mortars. The mortars had also fallen on the premises of Sri Lanka Telecom and Nadathivu Village, cuasing head injuries to Kapur Roshanui, a 4-year-old Muslim girl. The girl was subsequently admitted to Muttur hospital for treatment.

In Meesalai, Jaffna, on information given by a civilian, troops recovered a few T56 rounds and one T56 magazine and two hand grenades from an abandoned house.

In Thanankilappu, Jaffna, troops manning defences were attacked by terrorists using a heavy volume of mortars. Troops retaliated with counter-bombardment on terrorist locations. One terrorist was seriously injured. Six terrorists suffered injuries from terrorist mortar fire.

In Kattaparichchan, Trincomalee, troops on duty at a road block close to an Army detachment were fired upon by terrorists, who killed one soldier.

On Tuesday, in Mannar, a civilian was fired upon by an unidentified gunman. The civilian was evacuated to Mannar hospital for treatment.

Today around 12.15 am in Kokkothuduvai, Mullaitivu, troops in an ambush fired at a group of terrorists trying to infiltrate into security force controlled area.

The terrorists suffered heavy casualties and fled the area with their casualties.  Three terrorists were killed. The dead bodies will be handed over to Pulmudai police today to be handed over to the ICRC.
