Sri Lanka will for the first time participate in the under 17 and under 20 Youth Football Championships conducted by the FIFA/AFC from January next year, Manilal Fernando, Chairman Competition Committee Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) and Vice President Asian Football confederation (AFC) announced at a Press Conference Wednesday. In the under 17 championships Sri Lanka has been drawn along with Uzbekistan and Kajikistan in Group ‘D’ and the under 20 Sri Lankan team will play along with Maldives, Pakistan and Bangladesh in Group ‘B’. The two squads will be picked after the trials. The training sessions will follow. Meanwhile the SAARC Gold Cup Soccer Championship will be held in January 2002 in Bangladesh. All SAARC nations will compete in the Championship.
