Pakistan Captain Waqar Younis carried away the Khaleej Times Trophy 2001 after beating Sri Lanka by five-wickets in the final in Sharjah Sunday. After being asked to take the field, Pakistan shot out the Sri Lankans for 173 in 44.2 overs. Pakistan reached the target easily with 177 runs in 43.4 overs inspite of some fine spin bowling by Muttiah Muralitharan. Waqar Younis, celebrating his first tournament victory as captain, received a crystal trophy and the winner’s cheque for 120,000 dollars. Sri Lanka, denied a hat-trick of titles at the desert venue, earned 80,000 dollars. Zimbabwe, who lost all their four league matches received 50,000 dollars.
