Spin wizard Murali equals world record
[November 27, 2001 - 7:00 GMT]

Sri Lanka’s champion off spinner Muttaiah Muralitharan is now on par with Sir Richard Hadley the holder of the world record for the highest number of ten wicket hauls in test match cricket. Murali with his fourth consecutive ten-wicket haul in the Asgiriya Test against the West Indies on Sunday equaled the record of the legendary New Zealander.

The 29-year-old Muralitharan is only the second off-spinner in Test history to take 300 wickets. Lance Gibbs, the West Indian was the only previous off-spinner in the list. Murali has now taken a total of 371 test wickets in 68 matches. The West Indian Courtney Walsh holds the record with 519 wickets in 132 matches.  Murali has had five-wicket hauls in a Test innings on 31 occasions; Sir Richard holds that world record as well having done so 36 times.

Muttiah Muralitharan holds the world record for the best bowling figures in ODIs viz. seven for 30 in the Sharjah triangular tournament in 2000. He beat the previous best one-day mark of seven for 37, achieved by Pakistan's Aquib Javed against India at the same venue in October 1991.
