Sri Lanka defeated Zimbabwe today to secure their third consecutive series win. Fast bowler Charitha Fernando and Muttiah Muralitharan picked up two wickets apiece to bowl out Zimbabwe for 175. Sri Lanka won the game by an innings and 94 runs to establish an unassailable two-nil lead in the series. Muttiah Muralitharan, who narrowly missed Jim Laker’s world record of 10/53 on Thursday, eclipsed New Zealand's Richard Hadlee’s world record of nine-wicket match hauls yesterday to become the first man in Test cricket to take the most number of 10-wicket hauls. Murali, who has now taken five ten-fors in his last seven matches and played in 71st Tests has won the Sri Lankan Lion Ratings 2001 conducted by the Cricinfo website. “Muralitharan just kept on climbing during a record year in which he was the highest wicket taker in Test cricket with 80 victims- a world record for a spinner. He is without doubt the most valuable Lion in the team”, Cricinfo said.
