In a congratulatory message despatched to Galle within minutes of Muralitharan reaching the record, President Kumaratunga said, ‘You have brought fame to the motherland and gladdened the hearts of Sri Lankan everywhere’

Sri Lanka’s spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan became the youngest and quickest bowler to take Test 400 wickets today, the fourth day of the third test against Zimbabwe.

“You, I understand are the youngest to pass this landmark in the 124-year history of Test cricket”, President said in her message.

The 29 year old enters the 400-wicket club, and is two years younger than the Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne, who took his 400th wicket against England at the Oval last August.

“I am personally aware of the commendable sportsmanship you have displayed throughout your career on an off the field’, says President Kumaratunga, an obvious reference to the how Murali endured the unfortunate incidents down under where he was accused of chucking.

29-year old Murali reached the cherished landmark in his 72nd Test, which was eight games faster than New Zealand’s Sir Richard Hadlee, the previous quickest.
