The 65th annual two-mile sea swim conducted by the National Amateur Aquatic Sports Union (NAASU) of Sri Lanka was held off the coast of Mount Lavinia Sunday, with a record number of 583 swimmers taking part in the event. “Every year we have only around 400 swimmers taking part, but this year we had 440 men, and 58 women for the open championships while in the Juvenile Championships, 64 boys and 27 girls took part,” chief organiser, Shantha Wijeratne said. Swimmers from 60 clubs and schools islandwide, the three armed services and the Sri Lanka Police took part in the swim from the Mount Lavinia Hotel to Dehiwala Railway Station and back. “This year, the winner of the Juveline girls’ event, Imara Fahim (11) of Otters Aquatic Club became the youngest to win a championship in its 65-year history,” Shantha said. “We (NAASU) would also be representing Sri Lanka for the first time in the 6th World FINA (The International Federation for Swimming) Swimming Championship (25m) in Moscow from April 3 –5, 2002,” he added. Amongst the NAASU alumni are Jullian Bolling, Conrad Francis and Theekshana Rathnasekera who have represented Sri Lanka at the Olympic Games. The sea swim was sponsored by the Bank of Ceylon, Mount Lavinia Hotel and Master Divers.
