[April 18, 2002 - 11.30 GMT]

Pakistan routed Sri Lanka in the Sharjah Cup 2002 Final winning by 217 runs in a day-night match at the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium Wednesday.

Chasing a target of 295 runs, the Sri Lankan innings collapsed in just 16.5 overs and for a mere 78 runs.

Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka’s star spinner Muttiah Muralitharan damaged ligaments in his left shoulder in the 11th over of the match when he rolled over and fell after making a routine stop.

“Off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan is to be flown to Melbourne, Australia for examination by specialists to ascertain whether his shoulder injury requires surgery, following his return to Sri Lanka with the team on Friday,” a press release issued by the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka said.
