Sri Lanka began the World Cup tournament on a winning note when beating New Zealand by 47 runs at Goodyear Park yesterday. Skipper Sanath Jayasuriya who made an exciting century steered Sri Lanka to 272/7 off 50 overs after losing the toss and been invited to bat. Man-of-the-match Jayasuriya followed West Indian Brian Lara to score the second century of the 2003 World Cup. New Zealand were all out for 225 runs in 45.3 overs. Scott Styris scored a valiant 141 runs. Sri Lanka will play Bangladesh at Pietermaritzburg Oval on Friday.
