Former Peterite, SSC and Sri Lankan youth Cricketer Nirmal De Silva has been selected for the South Australian “State Spin Squad”. Nirmal De Silva left for Adelaide after completing a successful school career and became the first Sri Lankan to be selected for this spinner’s squad, which is coached by former Australian Cricketer Ashley Mallett. He also became the first Sri Lankan cricketer to play for Adelaide University Cricket Club in the South Australian District Cricket League. He was also invited to attend the “Australian Development Spin Camp” 2001 under Ray Bright. Nirmal De Silva had an outstanding career at St. Peter’s College and was named as the best bowler in the 64th “Battle of the Saints” big match and at the 24th limited over encounter against traditional rivals St. Joseph’s College in 1998. He was also awarded the prestigious “most outstanding” award for cricket at St. Peter’s colours night 2000. He also toured India, Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong with the Sri Lanka youth team. Nirmal was invited to undergo training at the Australian Cricket Academy during the winter period under former head coach of the Academy and former Australian player Rod Marsh & ACB coach Wayne Phillips. Due to these unique achievements in Adelaide Nirmal has been recruited by “Brighten Cricket Club” in Melbourne as their professional player for 2001/2002 in the Victoria Domestic Cricket Tournament. He will also represent Colombo Cricket Club Melbourne in the popular YCW Association “Sunday League” cricket tournament too. He is currently sponsored by Zipp’s Café Adelaide and presently pursuing a Double Degree in Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing)/Bachelor of Management (HRD).
