Top British aviation company opens its US $ 1.5m factory in SL

Bridport Aviation Products Lanka Limited (BAPLL), the world’s leading manufacturer of aviation textiles and cargo restraints opened its ultra modern factory in the Nittambuwa export processing zone yesterday.

BAPLL Commercial Director Ian Kentfield said that Sri Lanka was chosen after an extensive review of many countries throughout Asia. “The combination of a well educated, English speaking labour force plus attractive investment incentives and its geographical position made Sri Lanka the favoured location” he said.

This new US $ 1.5 million factory which has an area of 30,000 sq. ft. will manufacture cargo restraints such as pallet nets, seat bags, container door nets, tie down straps, airframe systems such as underfloor hold nets, fire retardant fabrics and defense systems which includes helicopter underslung load equipment, airdrop equipment and arrestor nets.

The company said that the workforce of the factory comprises around 150 Sri Lankan employees who are trained by Bridport experts in all aspects aviation products. 

BAPLL said that the company offers a broad range of well proven systems for air cargo management and restraint, servicing the world’s leading airlines such as British Airways.

“From quality design and manufacture, to worldwide customer support, our clients benefit from Bridport’s wealth of experience as the market leader,” said the Commercial Director.

“Since passenger and cargo safety depend on our products, we subject them to the most stringent quality standards in the industry,” he said. Bridport regularly audited by the FAA(USA) and CAA (UK).

Chief Guest at the ceremony, British High Commissioner for Sri Lanka Ms. Linda Duffield said that this is a new link that will strengthen the trade relations between Sri Lanka and UK. It is good to see new operations in Sri Lanka, she added. She also called on all employees to associate themselves with the production facilities to produce quality products.

Since 1979 Bridport Aviation products has gained a worldwide reputation for the original design and manufacture of a comprehensive range of specialist aviation equipment. The company’s clientele include US and European giants such as British Areopace, Boeing, Saab, Airbus Industry, BAE Systems, Embraer, Aeronavali and Fairchild Dornier. With the head office being in the town of Bridport, Dorset, England, it has major industrial installations in the US, Singapore and now in Sri Lanka.

The company is a member of Marmon Group of Companies which is an association of independent companies which operates 250 factories, 300 distribution centers with sales offices In 50 countries and has 40,000 employees.
